Chimney Rock, North Carolina, has been devastated by severe flooding caused by Hurricane Helene in late September 2024. The small village, along with nearby Lake Lure, saw catastrophic damage as the Broad River overflowed, submerging buildings and sweeping away structures. Roads and bridges in the area have been washed out, leaving the town cut off from surrounding regions. The iconic tourist destination is now struggling to recover, with widespread destruction reported.
Helene brought unprecedented rainfall to the region, with between one to two feet of rain falling over several days. The floodwaters left debris scattered throughout the town, including parts of buildings and large tree branches. Many homes and businesses were destroyed, and emergency services are still working to rescue those stranded in the region. Recovery will be a long process, as many residents return to scenes of utter devastation, describing it as "post-apocalyptic".
Government and local officials are focused on rebuilding efforts, but the scale of the damage, particularly to infrastructure, means it will take months before normalcy can be restored.
