This GI tag legally restricts the production of the laddu to the Tirumala temple, ensuring its authenticity and protecting the sanctity of its recipe. This status also highlights the laddu’s connection to the temple's heritage, preventing unauthorized duplication by sweet shops across the country. The annual demand for laddus runs into millions, with devotees considering it an essential part of their pilgrimage.


Recent news in 2024 has focused on scaling production to meet growing demand. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) trust has invested in modernizing its kitchen facilities, incorporating automated processes for laddu preparation while retaining traditional methods. This has allowed the temple to produce over 300,000 laddus daily during peak pilgrimage seasons, ensuring that every devotee receives the offering without compromising quality. Efforts have also been made to improve packaging, enabling longer preservation of the laddus during travel.


In addition to logistical advancements, the price of Tirupati Laddus has also been under discussion in recent years. While the TTD has kept the pricing affordable, occasional price revisions are necessary to offset rising costs of raw materials like ghee and sugar. However, in 2024, TTD confirmed that despite inflationary pressures, there would be no increase in laddu prices, ensuring that the sacred offering remains accessible to all devotees, irrespective of their financial means.


Beyond its culinary value, the Tirupati Laddu symbolizes the devotion of millions and acts as a bridge connecting the divine to the human realm. The Tirupati Laddu has recently been at the center of a controversy due to allegations of contamination and improper practices in its preparation. In September 2024, a devotee claimed to have found traces of tobacco in the prasadam, sparking widespread concern among pilgrims. This came on the heels of earlier allegations that animal fats were used in the laddus during a previous government administration, further intensifying the debate. In response to these issues, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) conducted a four-hour purification ritual, the *Shanti Homam*, to restore the sanctity of the temple and its offerings.


The controversy prompted political and religious leaders to call for investigations. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu criticized the former YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government for allegedly compromising the sacredness of the temple by altering the procurement procedures for ghee, one of the key ingredients in the laddus. To address the growing concerns, Naidu announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the allegations.


Amid this, the TTD reassured devotees that the sanctity of the Tirupati Laddu has been restored, emphasizing that the necessary rituals had been performed to safeguard its purity. The temple administration also made it clear that no adulteration practices would be tolerated, and steps were taken to ensure the highest standards in the preparation of the prasadam.


Despite these measures, the controversy has led to legal challenges. Multiple petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court, calling for an independent investigation into the matter. Devotees and Hindu organizations, including the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), have demanded swift action to maintain the integrity of the Tirupati Laddu, a symbol of religious devotion for millions.


The issue continues to draw attention, with both religious leaders and political figures weighing in. While the temple has taken significant steps to address the concerns, the Tirupati Laddu remains under scrutiny as authorities work to resolve the situation and restore trust among devotees.
